Why should 5 to 11 year olds get a second dose of a COVID vaccine?

So, whether your child has had COVID infection or not, a second dose of COVID vaccine will provide the best protection against illness for your child, against re-infection, and also against some of the long term health effects.

So, the 4 main reasons for your child to get their second dose of a COVID vaccine are:

Number 1 we're coming into winter. We know it's colder, children are spending more time indoors, so they are more likely to catch cold and flu viruses like COVID.

Secondly, their immunity after the first dose of vaccine reduces or wanes over time, so they are more vulnerable to COVID infection.

And thirdly, they may be at higher risk. Some children with chronic underlying health conditions, such as a weakened immune system or disability, are at higher risk of COVID infection and need that second dose for protection.

And lastly, community transmission. By ensuring that your child gets their second dose of COVID vaccine, we can reduce COVID cases in the community and transmitting the virus to others.
